I.HENRY GRAFF and MARGARETH (FRIES) GRAFF) were both living during the time of Napoleon di Bonaparte I (1769 to 1821) or during 1799 and 1815, which at that time were called the Napoleonic Wars and involved every major European power. They lived in Umstadt near Darmstadt in Hessen and were married circa 1809 or 1810. ELIZABETH (GRAFF) GRIMM often told me, that when she was only one day old, her mother had to flee with her little babe in her arms from the oncoming mighty Army of Napoleon I. That was on November 2, 1813. Her older brother, John George Graff, was then not quite three years old. Grandma Grimm also told us the German people raised many geese at that time. About 1830 a law was passed, that no one in a village or town was permitted to raise geese anymore. She said this angered our Great Grandmother MARGARETH GRAFF greatly and made up her mind that she no longer wanted to live in Germany. Her husband, our great grandfather HENRY GRAFF, also had made up his mind long before to take his family to a country free from kings, threats of war, and old world traditions. Early in 1831 they prepared to leave their home, cross the mighty Atlantic Ocean and go to a country where they were free from tyrannical rulers. My Great Grandmother told us they filled many bags with dried bread before they left their home to use as food on the boat. When they arrived in Pittsburgh it was only a small town. Our Great Grandfather Graff wanted to buy 40 acres of land in what is now downtown Pittsburgh along the Allegheny River. He could have had owned 40 acres of land for $200.00 but a friend of his Mr. KLEBER, who owned a music store in Pittsburgh and who was well to do, advised him not to buy that swampy land. He suggested that they go further north where good land was to be had very cheaply. So he came with his family to Saxonburg in the spring of 1832, where more Germans had already settled. HENRY GRAFF along with his two brother in-laws, GEORGE HENRY and ADAM FRIES came to Butler County in the spring of 1832. HENRY GRAFF bought a farm which is still part of the GRAFF farm on which AMOS GRAFF was still living until lately, when he sold the farm to a stranger.
II.ELISEBETH GRAFF first married HENRY HORR about 1834. They lived in Pittsburgh and had two children; MARGARETH died very young and ELISEBETH was born on July 17, 1837. Soon after her birth, Henry Herr while crossing the Allegheny River drowned when his boat tipped over. (There were no bridges at that time) The young widow then married HENRY GRIMM on September 29, 1838, a blacksmith by trade. They lived on the old Grimm farm, a part of the original Graff farm and later owned by John Foisted. In August 1851, Elisebeth Herr died when she was 14 years old and only five days later, her half-sister CHRISTINE GRIMM died at the age of 12 years old. They were two pious God fearing girls. Less than four years later their father Henry Grimm Sr. also died at age 48 and left his widow and seven children the youngest being five months old. Their children were
